What Is the Purpose of the Elevated Fingerboard?

What Is the Purpose of the Elevated Fingerboard?

WM Guitars Ltd |

The elevated fingerboard is a design innovation that improves playability, access, and resonance in high-end acoustic guitars. Originally developed for classical and archtop instruments, this feature has been refined by Turkowiak Guitars to enhance both ergonomics and tonal performance.

What Is an Elevated Fingerboard?

Unlike a standard neck, where the fingerboard sits flush against the guitar’s top, an elevated fingerboard is slightly lifted above the soundboard. This allows the top to vibrate more freely while providing better access to higher frets.

Key Benefits of an Elevated Fingerboard

  • Improved Upper Fret Access – By lifting the fingerboard away from the body, players can more easily reach the higher frets without obstruction.
  • Greater Soundboard Resonance – A floating or elevated fingerboard reduces restrictions on the guitar’s top, allowing it to vibrate more efficiently and project sound more openly.
  • More Comfortable Playability – A subtle shift in the guitar’s neck angle makes extended playing sessions more ergonomic, particularly for complex fingerstyle work.
  • Enhanced Sustain and Clarity – With less mass restricting the soundboard, the guitar benefits from increased sustain and note separation.

Why Turkowiak Uses an Elevated Fingerboard

Turkowiak incorporates this design into their Grand Auditorium and OM models, pairing it with other advanced features like Acoustic Tubes in the neck, True Temperament frets, and the S-Wave Resonator. This results in a more expressive, responsive instrument that delivers superior tonal depth and effortless playability.

For serious players who demand both technical precision and enhanced resonance, the elevated fingerboard is a game-changing feature that maximizes both comfort and sound quality.
